Communities

What are communities?

Communities are groups organized around animal types and breeds. Every breed and animal category on BestInShow has its own community page.

For example, there's a community for "Dogs," another for "Golden Retrievers," and so on. They're created automatically based on the animal types in our database — you don't need to create them yourself.

Communities are a great way to connect with people who share your interest in a specific breed or animal type.

Browsing communities

Visit the Communities page from the main navigation. You'll see all the top-level animal type categories.

Click into any one to explore its sub-types and breeds. Keep clicking deeper to find exactly the community you're looking for.

Community detail page

Each community page shows you everything happening in that group:

  • How many animals and photos belong to the group
  • The most active members
  • Tabbed sections for Activity, Subtypes, Animals, Photos, and Links

Use the tabs to switch between different types of content within the community.

Joining and leaving

Click the "Join" button on any community page. Once you join, activity from that community appears in your home feed.

Changed your mind? Click the button again to leave. You can join as many communities as you like — there's no limit.

Taxonomy navigation

Communities are organized in a tree structure. Think of it like folders on your computer.

"Dogs" is a root type. Under it you'll find breeds like "Golden Retriever" and "Labrador." Some breeds have further sub-types beneath them.

Use the breadcrumbs at the top of a community page to navigate back up the tree. Or browse the Subtypes tab to go deeper into more specific groups.
